The company - whose tea menu includes more than 650 blends from 36 producing countries - has seven tea houses in Paris, five in Japan and one in England, and relies on a large network of distributors around the world (delicatessens, department stores, etc.) which it banned, for 14 years, from selling its products on the internet and using its logo. This cartel practice is sanctioned in 2023 by the Competition Authority, which imposes a fine of 4 million euros on the company.
The Mariage family began trading spices and colonial goods in 1660, with Nicolas Mariage being commissioned by Louis XIV to bring back teas from Persia and India. Two members of the Mariage family, Auguste and Aimé, originally from Lille , settled in 1830 in the Marais district of Paris, to work in the colonial goods trade and in the sugar refinery.
The 1st June 1854, the last two sons of Aimé Mariage, Henri and Édouard, set out on their own and founded Mariage Frères, a house importing teas and vanillas. The house supplies delicatessens, tea rooms and hotels.
